Induced Seismic Monitoring
Real-Time Event Detection Location and Notification Services
Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) development, oil and gas well completions, and waste fluid injection (e.g., Salt Water Disposal) operations can all potentially cause induced seismicity. ISTI’s Induced Seismic Monitoring (ISM) services provide operators with high-precision, real-time feedback to help determine whether seismic events are natural or a result of their operations.
Our seismologists will assess the potential seismicity in a region and design real-time solutions in response to regulatory requirements, production operations, and environmental monitoring needs. We can provide a complete solution that includes the following:
High-availability data acquisition
Automatic event detection
Automatic and/or manual event review and notification based on service-level requirements
Equipment installation and decommissioning; this includes sensors, data loggers, real-time telemetry systems, autonomous power system ( typically solar power), and civil works.
Turn-key, site-permitting services
We offer our Induced Seismic Monitoring Service on either a local or regional scale, depending on the required Magnitude of Completeness (Mc), monitoring duration, and frequency of operations. Solutions may include data subscriptions to an existing private array, public stations, installation of a dedicated array, or combinations thereof.
Our Experience
Our team deploys reliable telemetry systems to stream data to our centralized processing data center. Data is processed automatically in real time and can be manually reviewed and post processed under the guidance of ISTI’s experienced seismologists. Automatic and manually reviewed solutions are made available immediately via a secure Web portal and/or SMS and/or email notification for those events meeting customer-specified criteria.
In addition, ISTI’s team of seismologists can provide you with a post-processing solution of advanced data products, including focal mechanisms, moment tensors, shear-wave splitting studies, full waveform inversion, double-difference earthquake locations, and seismic tomography.
Please see our Advanced Processing and Scientific Consulting page for more information on our advanced data processing products.
Example station
A typical ISTI-installed induced seismicity monitoring station uses a 3-component, 10s borehole/posthole sensor. Our stations are completely autonomous and provide real-time data back to our New York operations center, which has a fiber-backed internet connection and redundant servers with redundant power sources.
TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM
ISTI can also provide you with a Traffic Light System (TLS). Injection operators receive immediate, direct feedback about the injection operations, which helps avoid costly downtime. Unlike our competitors’ typical installations, we provide advanced processing algorithms that obtain information on smaller-magnitude events.
