The S-100 Wide Band Seismic Sensor

S-100 wide band seismic sensor (MK3 version)

Overview

The S-100 MK3 (third generation) is a three-component, velocity output, seismic sensor. The design is based on the force balance principle using three simple geophone elements, allowing the frequency bandwidth to be extended from 90 Hz down to 0.1 Hz. The default cable length between the sensor casing and the electronics box is approximately 20 meters, but it can be extended up to 150 meters.

+ Additional Details

The sensing elements are housed in the same 50 mm casing making a solid waterproof sensor suitable for installation into boreholes, where the noise is much less than at the surface. The elements are oriented according to the three-axis principle. A dot mark, incised on the plastic cover of the case, indicates the North direction. A surface-mount sensor package is also available.

An advanced signal conditioner circuit controls the sensor. It supplies current to the geophones, forcing them to vibrate constantly at different frequencies. The signal conditioner circuit is fully protected against overvoltage, opposite power supply polarity, and inductive lighting currents. When inactive, it enters the “power-off” mode to reduce the system's power consumption.

+ Features

  • Three-axis wideband response (10 sec – 98 Hz) seismic sensor
  • Designed according to the force balance principle
  • High sensitivity 1500 V/m/s, ultra-low power consumption
  • Borehole type, 50 mm diameter, elastic packer mounting
  • Typical 20 m cable length, optional up to 150 m
  • Built-in self-test function.

The S-100 Wide Band Seismic Sensor

The S-100 wideband seismic sensor (Surface type)

Overview

The S-100 is a three-component, velocity-equivalent output seismic sensor. The unit is ideal for local and regional seismicity and microseismicity monitoring, as well as for induced microseismicity monitoring.

+ Additional Details

The design is based on the force balance principle. Using three geophone elements, the bandwidth is extended to a lower frequency than the original geophone’s natural frequency. Three generations of the S-100 sensor have been implemented. Several low and upper corner frequencies are provided through different sensor configurations. Therefore, 10s, 5s, 2s, and 1s low-cut frequency corners are available, as well as 50, 80, and 98 Hz high-cut frequency corners. The sensitivity is 1000 V/m/s for the Mk1 version, while it has been increased to 1500 V/m/s for the Mk2 and Mk3 versions.

The surface type has similar characteristics to the borehole type. No mass lock or centering is required, which makes an easy connection with the digitizer. The settling time of the unit is very short, only thirty seconds. Sensitivity is 1500 V/m/s (differentially), thus providing a very sensitive seismic unit. A test line is also provided for calibration and testing.

  • Three-axis wide-band response (10 sec – 98 Hz) seismic sensor
  • Designed according to the force balance principle
  • High sensitivity 1500 V/m/s
  • Ultra-low power consumption
  • Surface type
  • Velocity feedback design
  • Built-in self-test function

The C-100 seismic sensor

Overview

The C-100 is a three-component, velocity-equivalent output seismometer. The sensor consists of three geophone elements, one per axis. When combined with our force balance electronics (third generation), the bandwidth is extended to 10 sec – 98 Hz, and the sensitivity is increased to 1500 V/m/s.
